Creative Snow Day (or Any Day) Idea

Even though winter is almost (hopefully!) behind us, I wanted to share a creative idea that was used by one of our local VLA teachers. A few weeks ago, we were plagued (or blessed depending on your point of view) with multiple snow days. This VLA teacher decided to take those snow days as an opportunity to offer some extra credit to her VLA students. On one snow day in particular, she challenged her students to submit at least one unit for her to grade. If they submitted that day, then she would offer them extra credit. It was a fun incentive, and it probably motivated some of her students to get busy and turn in some work.

Maybe you don't need a big holiday like Christmas to offer an extra credit activity. Be creative! Maybe your birthday is coming up, and you can offer your students a gift from you for your birthday. You might celebrate a fun "holiday" like one of these:

  • Celebrate the running of the Iditarod race (March 7 - 15).
  • Math teachers might give 3.1416 bonus points on Pi Day (March 14).
  • Health teachers might celebrate World Health Day (April 7).

For a list of official, crazy, and bizarre holidays, go HERE. Whether you choose to celebrate a holiday or something more everyday, have a little fun with your students. Thanks, Chrissy, for this great idea!
