New & Updated VLA Courses!!

JCESC Earns Second Homeschool Award

STEUBENVILLE- For the second year in a row, the Jefferson County Educational Service Center is gaining recognition from a national site because of its online curriculum offerings.
The JCESC received the Top Homeschooling Curriculum Award for 2014 by Homeschool.com. More than 20 programs from around the country were selected by a team review from the website based on 2,200 votes from homeschool families using online curriculum. Some comments in the review deemed the VLA course as “flexible, customizable, and interactive,” as well as self-paced, having up-to-date material, and designed so that parents can manage the coursework, projects and assignments. VLA has an accredited online distance eduation for students in all 50 states and throughout the world. To date, over 60,000 students have utilized the VLA.
Teresa Silvestri, JCESC director of education and outreach, said officials learned of the distinction this week and were pleased to receive the prestigious honor yet again. Nominations were sought over a two-week period and a team of reviewers selected the winners.
“Homeschool.com is a website for anybody with an interest in homeschooling and it’s a really great resource for homeschool families,” Silvestri added. “We’re honored to be selected. These are people who wanted to choose the best of the best and we’re honored they gave us their stamp of approval.”
“It’s a credit to the ESC staff and it’s an acknowledgment that we’ve strived to provide high-quality education for homeschool students,” said Superintendent Dr. George Ash.
Since 2001, the JCESC VLA has offered more than 100 courses that are fully aligned with the Ohio Academic Content Standards and is one of only eight ESCs in the nation to receive national accreditation by North Central Association on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI), an accreditation division of AdvancED. The VLA provides an extensive portfolio of web-based curriculum spanning grades K-12, offered through a user-friendly Learning Management System that can be easily navigated by students of all ages and abilities.
